Highs and Lows…

I’m going to be honest here. I thought long and hard about what to write about today. I couldn’t come up with anything. I am a very organized person and I can’t stand when things are out of order or things don’t go according to plan… a little bit of a perfectionist, maybe?! Well, last week I had 5 sessions scheduled and only ended up shooting 1. Due to Hurricane Irene and 1 of my clients being sick, 4 were postponed to a later date. Needless to say, it threw me off a little bit. And the blog calendar that was once filled, is now empty. So as I thought of what to write today… I decided I’d try something a little different. And since this is the last day of August, I found it fitting. I don’t know if this will be ongoing monthly post but today I’m going to just roll with it and post August’s highs and lows.

HIGHS

My birthday: This year I turned 23 and took the entire day off to spend it relaxing and with the people I love most, my family. It was a wonderful day!

Friends: Being a business owner, it is hard finding time for your personal life. A lot of times I let my work consume me and I may not realize it until it’s too late. Well, this month I made sure I was going to spend time with one of my long lost best friends, Kristin. We were friends throughout high-school and pretty much inseparable. About a week ago we had a fun evening at dinner and catching up!! (We had a few years of catching up to do!) I am going to MAKE SURE I never go that long without spending time with people that are important in my life. If I can’t find time, I’m going to MAKE time. I love my job, but people are not as important as pictures.

Client Relationships: Do you remember Monday’s post about the importance of loving your photographer? Well, this month I had the privilege to meet and book an AMAZING couple. All of my clients are amazing but this client consult was definitely one of my favorites. Their names are Sarah and Chris and they are getting married next June. Sarah and I hit it off right away and I knew regardless of whether she chose me, I’d keep in touch with her. She’s like a girlfriend you could just sit and talk with for hours. We had so much in common and I feel so lucky they chose me and can’t wait to work with them!

LOWS

The Earthquake: I think this could have been one of the scariest things I’ve ever been through. I have never felt an earthquake and my experience was one I’ll never forget. We live near Fort AP Hill so I’m used to a little house shake here and there. I was sitting at my computer chatting with a friend and fellow photog from New Jersey when all of a sudden our house started shaking like crazy! I screamed, “I HAVE TO GO, SOMETHING IS HAPPENING TO OUR HOUSE!?” and I hung up. Things fell, my computer came tumbling down into my lap (thankfully I was there to catch it!), my dogs were howling, Theodore was crying and I had no idea what had happened. I honestly thought, at first, something had crashed into our house…. in a panic I tried calling 911 and realized the phones didn’t work and turned on the news to find we had had an earthquake. Thankfully we are all okay and we didn’t find any structural damage on our house.

Lack of Exercise: This is kind of along the same lines and finding time to hang out with friends while running a business full time. I am preaching to myself here when I say you need to make time! Unfortunately it didn’t happen this month, exercise that is. I don’t think I worked out once and I’m not proud of myself. I’m going to try again next month!

Hurricane Irene: Yes, we had two major weather conditions happen here in Virginia in the same week. Hurricane Irene came storming through with all of her might on Saturday, August 27th. It rained HARD and the wind was blowing harder. We were very fortunate not to lose our lights but for a few hours and I know a lot of you are still without them! I am sad to hear of the deaths and the damage caused by Irene and I’m certainly keeping those families in my prayers while thanking the Lord that my family and friends remained safe. We didn’t have any major damage here. We had a few trees fall and A LOT of sticks and limbs all over the place and our driveway flooded but that was it and I’m thankful that was all.

So here’s to a fabulous month and hoping September is even more fabulous!

Oh, and a picture to make the post prettier :) and since fall is just around the corner, I found this to be fitting…

[...] I can’t believe how time flies… August has been a great month, check out my post on August’s highs & lows here. I have a lot going on this month; lots of weddings, portrait sessions, meetings and special [...]

Wooow, I love that image! It’s amazing what changing your height will do for photographs. SOmetimes I sit on the ground with my camera and think “Whoa, it’s like a whole different world down here!”
