I’ve had the songs stuck in my head since last Monday. I’ve been humming/singing the theme song along with the other two songs from VBS all week. For those of you that don’t know what VBS stands for, it’s Vacation Bible School.
Each year we have a theme. The theme this year was, “Amazing Wonders Aviation.” And we talked a lot about the POWER of God. And how AMAZING he is and the wonders he is capable of creating.
I’ve been helping with VBS for quite some time now! I look forward to it every year. This year at Concord Baptist Church was just as exciting :) I was helping with the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. I loved this age group! They were smart, funny and so sweet! Each day we had dinner, recreation, music, bible study time and crafts. VBS is open to ALL age groups, even adults and children as young as 3 years old :)
I remember Vacation Bible School being a huge part of my childhood. I got SO excited for it every year. I got to make new friends, meet new people and make neat things. Crafts were always my favorite part of VBS. I remember so many cool experiences! My favorite being- bring your pet to VBS day! Nannie, Sarah and I brought our dog, Michelle. I remember seeing all types of animals. And someone even brought their horse. I have so many awesome memories surrounding Vacation Bible School…. they’ve stayed with me my entire life. I think it’s crucial for children to learn about Jesus. To grow up with those values and to grow up KNOWING there was someone always with me. VBS is all about teaching children about Jesus and instilling great values within them that will hopefully stay with them their entire lives. I remember learning and hearing the stories of Jesus. I remember those experiences. The VBS curriculum is presented in a way that is fun for children. Kids want to come to VBS! It’s a way to fellowship with other children your age and learn all the amazing things God has done for us.
On Monday, one of the kids in Karen’s and my class looked up and me and said, “This is so much fun! I thought it was going to be boring, I can’t wait to come back!” Why is it boring to learn about Jesus?! We DEFINITELY don’t want kids to associate those two words together. We also don’t want kids to come to VBS just to have fun. We want them to learn… but learn in a way that will stay with them. Karen did SUCH an amazing job with this. After the lesson each night, she would ask a series of questions. If you got it right, you got a prize. So of course the kids are going to pay attention- who doesn’t want a cool glow in the dark bracelet?! But bribing them them with awesome prizes isn’t the point. It’s that the kids WANTED to learn. And they were SO excited to recite their bible verses each day, they were excited to sing songs about Jesus, they were excited to fellowship with one another! It was a wonderful week at VBS this year!
The children in our class have touched my life more than they could ever know! I LOVE those kids!!!! We were blessed with 12 amazing children and EIGHT of those 12 said they wanted to accept Christ into their lives! That is HUGE and I am so proud of them :) I am looking so forward to seeing them again!!!
On the last night, Kim, our director organized an awesome surprise for all of the kids! After dinner and ice-cream, we headed outside to see. There was a plane flying back and forth over the church! The kids thought it was so cool! It was great to show them the POWER that God has to have created man who can fly in planes. A God that created a way for this to even be possible! They really loved it and I loved seeing their smiling faces and their little hands waving up at the pilot :)
* Everyone involved did SUCH an amazing job!! The dinner each night was amazing, the music was perfect, the recreation was so much fun, crafts are always a blast and everything was super organized! Hooray for a successful VBS 2012!!!
